What to do

Single pages like 7, ranges like 2-5, and 8- for page 8 to the end. Typing 3, 1, 2 puts them in that order.

What this does

It takes one PDF apart, four ways:

  • Extract pages keeps the pages you name, in the order you name them.
  • Delete pages keeps every other page, in its original order.
  • Split into files cuts the document into pieces of a fixed number of pages — small enough for a form's upload limit, or one page per file.
  • Split after pages cuts where you say the sections end. Typing 3, 10 makes three files: pages 1-3, 4-10, and 11 to the end. Use this one when the parts are different lengths, which is most documents that have parts at all.

The file never leaves your device. The documents people need to cut down are the long ones: statements, contracts, medical records, a scan of every page of a passport.

How to write the pages

Pages are numbered from 1, the way your PDF reader numbers them. Separate them with commas or spaces.

  • 5 — page 5.
  • 2-5 — pages 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • 8- — page 8 to the last page. last is the last page on its own.
  • 5-2 — pages 5, 4, 3 and 2, in that order.
  • 3, 1, 2 — three pages, page 3 first.

A dash from a word processor works as well as a hyphen. If a page does not exist, the field says which one and how many the document has.

Picking pages by sight or by number

Once the PDF is chosen, every page appears under the field with a box to tick. Ticking a page writes it into the field, and typing in the field ticks the pages you name, so the two always agree — tick a few pages by sight, or type 8- for everything from page 8 on, whichever is quicker. Each page says what will become of it: kept as page 2 of the new file, deleted, or in which file of a split.

The line beside the button reads the result back in words — "Keeps 3 pages: 5, 1–2." — before anything is made, so a screen reader hears exactly what the pictures show. The pictures are drawn in your browser too, by an engine fetched only once you choose a file.

Splitting into files

Say how many pages go in each file. Ten pages at 3 per file makes four files, of 3, 3, 3 and 1 pages. The files are named after yours and numbered from report-part-01.pdf up, so they sort in order in any folder. Download them one at a time, or all at once as a zip file — also made in your browser, and without compressing the PDFs again, since a PDF is already compressed inside.

To put files back together, or to join pages from different documents, use Merge PDF.

Password-protected PDFs

A PDF with a password cannot be opened here, and the page says so by name rather than producing a broken file. Remove the password in the app that set it, then choose the file again.

Nothing is uploaded

Your browser reads the file, copies the pages and saves the result. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the test suite for this page records the requests the tool makes while a file is processed and fails if one of them could carry it.

Questions

How do I split a PDF?

Choose the PDF, pick Split into files, and say how many pages go in each file — 1 makes one file per page. Press Split into files, then download them one at a time or all together as a .zip. Nothing is uploaded.

How do I extract some pages from a PDF?

Choose Extract pages and tick the pages you want under their pictures, or type them, like 1-3, 5. The new PDF holds exactly those pages, in the order you ticked or typed them, and the line beside the button says which pages it will keep before you press it.

How do I delete pages from a PDF?

Choose Delete pages and tick the ones to remove, or type them, like 2, 4-6. Every other page stays, in its original order, whatever order you picked the deleted ones in.

Can I reorder the pages?

Yes, with Extract pages: the new file follows the order you tick or type. Ticking page 3 and then page 1 puts page 3 first; typing 10-1 reverses a ten-page document. Each page says where it will land, like Kept as page 2.

Why does it take a moment before the pages appear?

Drawing a PDF page takes a rendering engine of about half a megabyte, several times what any other page on this site sends in total, so it is fetched only once you choose a file — and only the pages you scroll to are drawn. Until then each page shows as its outline, and ticking or typing pages works the whole time.

Will the text still be selectable?

Yes. Pages are copied as they are — text, fonts, images and drawings — not turned into pictures. Bookmarks, form fields and the document’s title belong to the original document and do not come across.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the PDF, takes it apart and saves the result on your device. The test suite for this page fails if any request the tool makes while a file is processed could carry one.
